1. Swim with whale sharks

The whale shark is the largest living fish in the sea. Tours leave from Isla Mujeres or Cancun. Season runs from mid-June to August.

You need a sunny day for the boats to run, so weather can change your plans. Plan to be a strong or at least decent swimmer. The activity is for snorkeling only, not diving, because the sharks swim near the surface.

2. Dive the underwater museum

The underwater museum is a beginner’s dive spot. Its statues are now covered in coral. Certified divers can go right in.

If you are not open water certified, you need a 2-hour certification first. The dive itself is less than an hour and calm. A waterproof camera helps for photos.

3. Take the ferry to Isla Mujeres

Ferries leave from Puerto Juarez, Punta Sam, the Cancun Hotel Zone and Gran Puerto Cancun. Boats run every half hour until 9pm. A one-way ticket costs 80 pesos, bought on site, and the trip takes less than an hour.

The island is small. You can rent a golf cart for the day and visit Garrafon Park and Tortugranja.

4. Explore Maya ruins and museums

Chichen Itzá is the obvious trip for classic pyramids. The El Rey ruins are closer. They are an abandoned city in an old fishing village, left empty since the 1500s. The site is tiny but gives a strong sense of place.

Tulum has the best preserved relics in the area. You can also see El Rey and Yamil Lu’um right in Cancun. For the full story of the region, visit the Mayan Museum of Cancún.

Another option is the Aké Ruins and Hacienda. They hold a Maya raised road, a pyramidal palace and a henequen hacienda.

5. Cool off in a cenote

Good cenotes lie outside Cancun, though not far. Popular picks include Siete Bocas, Ik Kil and Azul. Cenote Suytun sits about 2 hours away. Go first thing in the morning to beat the crowds.

Divers can head to Nohoch Nah Chich, part of the Yucatan’s longest subterranean cave system. Non-divers can swim and snorkel in its pools. A rental car lets you hop between cenotes at your own pace.

Aktun Chen offers dry caves with stalactites, plus swimming and ziplining.

6. Go out at Mandala

The Hotel Zone, Avenida Kukulkan, is a 14-mile (22-kilometer) strip with shopping, dining and nightlife. Mandala nightclub stands out for its multilevel design and wide dance floor. It also hosts weekly pool parties with live DJ sets.

Mandala Beach Club works by day too. You can lounge on beds and cabanas with poolside service. At night the space turns into open-air dance floors.

7. Taste tequila and street tacos

The Museum of Tequila covers how the drink is made and where it began. Your tour ends with a tasting.

For tacos, try a local tour of the city’s food trucks. Tianguis de la 94 opens Thursdays and Saturdays. Tianguis de la 100 opens Sundays. Mercado 28 is open every day except Tuesday, 9am to 8pm.

8. Relax on Isla Blanca

Isla Blanca lies about 12 miles (20 kilometers) north of Cancun. It sits between the Caribbean Sea and Chacmuchuch Lagoon. Wide beaches and shallow water make it calmer than the Hotel Zone.

There are few tourist developments here. Come for kitesurfing or beach lounging on an unspoiled shoreline.

Tips before you go

Cancun works as a base for day trips within a 2-3 hour radius. Book whale shark tours ahead, since the popular ones can sell out.

The pink lakes of Las Coloradas are not in Cancun. They are a 3 1/2-hour drive away. You gain an hour crossing time zones, so a 7am start can reach them by 10am. Valladolid makes a stop on the way for an overnight trip.

Shoppers can stroll La Isla Shopping Village on Nichupte Lagoon. It has canals, waterfront dining, a casino and an aquarium.

What secrets are in Cancun?

Some of the quieter spots are the small El Rey ruins and Yamil Lu’um. Isla Blanca has few tourist developments. Cenote Suytun is a longer drive, but it is worth an early start.

Cancun gives adults plenty beyond the club scene. Pair a sea day with whale sharks or diving, then add ruins, a cenote or a taco tour. Save a night for Mandala if you want music and a pool party.
