A week in Cancun works best with one main activity per day. Beach mornings come before excursions, and big nights come before slow mornings. Seven days leave room for Chichen Itza and real downtime.
Overview: your week at a glance
This plan follows that order. Day 2 is the long ruin day. Day 4 is the island day. Day 5 is the reef and night-out day. Day 7 stays empty so you can reach your flight.
Here is the week in short:
- Day 1: arrive at Cancun International Airport (CUN), transfer, beach and pool.
- Day 2: Chichen Itza day trip.
- Day 3: recovery day with optional Hotel Zone sights.
- Day 4: Isla Mujeres and Playa Norte.
- Day 5: MUSA snorkel, beach club, night out.
- Day 6: slow morning, downtown, farewell dinner.
- Day 7: departure.
Five rules shape the week. Pick one anchor per day: a day trip, a beach club or a big night, never all three. Book water activities early in the trip, so weather cancellations can be rescheduled. Never put a morning excursion after the club night. Give Chichen Itza its own day. Keep departure day clean.
Shorter trips cut different things. Three days work for a focused long weekend, and you skip cenotes and ruins. A week lets you add the big ruin, a second adventure and some rest.
Day trips shift the math on a short stay. With only 3 days in the area, a day trip is not worth taking. With seven, you can afford one long excursion and still rest.
Day 1: Arrive, transfer and settle in
Start at Cancun International Airport (CUN). The easy first day is land, settle, then beach and pool, with a casual dinner. Do nothing more. You have a full week ahead.
You have several ways to reach the Hotel Zone. The ADO bus terminal is inside the airport. Tickets cost around $140 MXN, and buses leave about every 40 minutes. Routes R1 and R2 then cover the zone for about $12 MXN per person.
Taxis are the faster choice. Official taxis can be booked at the authorized booths inside the terminal, where you see fixed rates. Fares start from $700 MXN to the Hotel Zone. Uber and DiDi work in Cancun, but they are only allowed to drop people off at the airport.
Shuttles and private cars are other options. Private transfers are advisable for three or more people. One or two travelers pay less on the shuttle, though private is faster.
Staying in Playa del Carmen instead?
Book the MUSA snorkel for Day 5 on this first day. Water activities booked early leave room to reschedule if the weather turns.
Day 2: Chichen Itza day trip
Give Chichen Itza the whole day. The drive alone is 5–6 hours round trip. Pairing it with anything ambitious does not work.
Leave Cancun early. Chichen Itza sits about 2.5 hours from Cancun. Many people see it on a full-day excursion.
Plan a cenote stop on the way back. There are said to be over 6,000 cenotes in the region. Most popular ones lie outside Cancun. A few are within a 30-minute drive.
Keep the evening quiet. Plan an easy dinner and an early night. The big night out belongs to Day 5.
Day 3: Recovery day and Hotel Zone sights
Treat this as the rest day. The recovery day is built around the resort pool, a spa and an easy dinner. Spend the morning there.
If you want something light later, the Hotel Zone has a few simple stops. They are listed here from the south end of the zone to the north, in the order that fits a short afternoon.
- Museo Maya de Cancún and the San Miguelito ruins at Blvd. Kukulcan km 16.5. Entry is M$100. The museum is the best choice when it rains.
- Skywheel Cancun at La Isla, right beside the aquarium.
La Isla puts the wheel and the aquarium side by side. That makes a short afternoon. See the aquarium first, then ride the wheel near sunset.
One option suits people who want more action. The office is at Blvd. Kukulcan Km 5.8 and opens daily, 06:00–19:30. That is a big spend for a rest day, so skip it if you want a calm break.
Day 4: Isla Mujeres and Playa Norte
Take a ferry or a catamaran to Isla Mujeres. The island day pairs the crossing with Playa Norte and an island lunch. Isla Mujeres is a relaxed half-to-full day, and this plan gives it a full day.
Go in the morning and swim at Playa Norte around midday. Eat lunch on the island. A relaxed dinner fits this day.
The island and Chichen Itza fit in one week, on separate days. Both fit in any itinerary of four days or longer. Keep the evening easy, because Day 5 starts early with the reef.
Day 5: MUSA snorkel, beach club and a night out
Start with the water. The order is a MUSA or reef snorkel in the morning, a beach club in the afternoon and the big club night after dark.
MUSA is the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art. You can snorkel and dive there among sculptures from famous artists on the seabed, with the Mesoamerican coral reef around them. Prices range from $58–65 USD for a snorkeling tour.
Spend the afternoon on a beach club daybed. Rest before dinner. Then go out in your one going-out outfit.
This is your single big night. Never schedule a morning excursion after the big club night, as it is the most-violated rule in Cancun and the most regretted. Day 6 starts slowly for that reason.
Day 6: Slow morning, downtown and farewell dinner
Sleep in. A souvenir run or a downtown food crawl comes next, then a sunset farewell dinner.
Start at Mercado 28 in downtown Cancun. It sells mariachi hats, tequila shot glasses, locally made shoes and handicrafts. Prices can be higher there, but bargaining can get you a good deal.
The settlement peaked around 250–600 AD. Go before lunch so you finish well before closing.
Finish the day with the sunset dinner. Pack that evening, so Day 7 stays clean.
Day 7: Departure day
Keep this day clean. The rule is a last swim, packing, the transfer and nothing booked.
Arrange your ride to the airport the day before. The bus, taxi and shuttle options appear under Day 1. The transfer company runs its fleet 24/7 with private transfers and shared shuttles, so early flights are covered.
Getting around and transport tips
Most of this plan sits in the Hotel Zone along Blvd. Kukulcan. Sights there carry kilometer markers, such as Km 4.5 for the tower and Km 12.5 for La Isla. Routes R1 and R2 cover the entire zone for about $12 MXN per person.
Taxis are quicker between sights. Agree on the fare before you start. Uber and DiDi also work in the city.
Other day trips exist, but they do not fit this week. Most people take day trips to Tulum (2 hours), Playa del Carmen (1 hour), Akumal (1.5 hours) or Chichen Itza (2.5 hours). Add one only by dropping another day. Playa del Carmen is a mid-range beach town, a mix between Cancun and Tulum.
Closer places suit a half day. Nichupte Lagoon is 30 minutes from downtown and less than 10 minutes from parts of the Hotel Zone. Puerto Morelos Beach is a quieter beach 30 minutes south of Cancun. Isla Blanca is farther, a remote beach 2 hours north of Cancun.
Pack reef-safe sunscreen. Add one going-out outfit for the big night.
Carry pesos for local sights. Museum and ruin entry is quoted as M$100, and the wheel as MXN $299. The fishing charter is quoted in US dollars.
Where to stay: Hotel Zone or downtown
Most of the sights on this plan sit in the Hotel Zone. That makes it the simple base for a week. Many travelers weigh an all-inclusive hotel in the Hotel Zone against a local Airbnb for the week.
The Hotel Zone puts the beach, the pool and La Isla close together. Downtown holds Mercado 28 and the local food crawl. You can reach both on Day 6 whichever base you pick.
How many days do you need for Cancun?
Four to five days cover the highlights comfortably: beach time, Isla Mujeres, one adventure and a night out. Three days suit a focused long weekend. Seven days let you add Chichen Itza and real downtime.
What is a good itinerary for a 7-day trip to Mexico?
For a week based in Cancun, use the plan above. It opens with arrival and a Chichen Itza day. It moves through a recovery day, Isla Mujeres, and a reef and night-out day. It ends with a slow farewell day and a clean departure.
A shorter plan gives a sense of the pacing. The 5-day version runs: beach day, Isla Mujeres, Mayan ruins, a day trip, then downtown Cancun. This week stretches that rhythm with a rest day and a night out.
Making the plan work
This week gives you one big ruin day, one island day, one reef day and one night out. The rest is beach, easy meals and rest. Add Hotel Zone sights only when you have the energy.
